Medium, the method in which a piece of text is being circulated, and audience are indeed related. To me it all comes down to that the audience will communicate differently depending on what the medium is. Depending on what way the text is being given will change how the audience will interact with it. For example, if the medium was let’s say an orchestra concert. The audience may not have any communication or interaction until the end of the show or the interaction will be happening on an individual level. One might be communicating to themselves what they perceive the medium to be. In the concert case one might be communicating to themselves on how boring/exciting they find the music. Another example would be through a group message on an iPhone. The text is being circulated though the messages on the phones. The interaction between the audiences is much more social than it would be in the concert case. Another good example I think is the Rocky Horror Picture show. Although for most plays one might think that the audience wouldn’t interact with the medium right there and in a social way. The Rocky Horror Picture show is one that breaks the fourth wall and creates a social interaction between the medium and audience that allows the two to communicate right there. In the end I think that depending on the certain way that the medium is presenting the text will cause for a change in how the audience will perceive and act upon that text that is given.
The relationship between medium and audience is something that I am considering for the “Intro to…” project because I must consider how my message will reach my selected audience. Medium is the form in which message is delivered and audience is who receives the message. While writing, it is important to consider who the audience is not only to tailor the information included but also to decide how they will receive that information. For example, my intended audience for the “Intro to…” project are teachers in the United States teaching kindergarten through twelfth grade writing courses to English second language learners. As I am gathering my information and forming my argument, I am also considering how my audience will access this information. I must think about how my audience finds information, how long they will attend to the message, and how they wish to see it presented. Medium and audience have an interdependent relationship because the medium affects the type of audience that will access the information as well. If I choose to post a video to teachers, I may or may not reach that audience depending on the tendencies of the audience; therefore, it is imperative for a writer to consider how their medium will contribute to their delivery of their ideas to their intended audience. Deliberate and calculated selections must be done in order to achieve effective communication.
There is a very intricate relationship between the audience and the medium. I can be honest before this class I never thought about how writing changes depending on the type of medium it is done in. There is a very important relationship between where or what medium a writing is being done in and the type of audience will read the writing. As a writer you have to think about who the audience is that you are trying to get your message too. Say if you were writing a piece that was aimed at millennials the first thought for the medium would be online, things like, Facebook, blogs, twitter. That would be the most efficient way to reach that specific audience. You would not want to go and write a newspaper article in hard print because that’s not where younger people look for their information. So the type of medium that is chosen for the writing will affect the type of audience that is going to look at it. To be able to relate to the correct audience that you are trying to reach out to you have to think about where and when you should put out the information because that completely changes how it is received by that audience. This is a relationship that is going to have to be kept in mind when we are doing out intro to projects because we want our information to go to a specific intended audience. So how we portray and where were write out information will change what audience is going to be receiving that information. Also like in the Wikipedia encyclopedia assignment we also learned that the way things are written is changed from medium to medium. So we have to keep in mind where we are writing and they type of writing style that is used in that medium.
Different mediums will bring different audiences. Choosing your audience can be accomplished by writing in a specific medium and vice versa. Take Myspace for example; the outdated online social media website still attracts children in middle school and high school. Yes, it is still up and running. Specific topics also have expected mediums and audiences. Writing about a successful surgery is typically done in an online journal and is directed toward other surgeons. Some mediums have limited access for certain audiences, while other mediums are general and very broad like Facebook and YouTube. Mediums also play into how you perceive your audiences. Tinder is an online forum that adults use to look for a date. When using this app or website, people are expecting their audience to be good looking, in their target age range and willing to date or have a one-night stand. This perception is that most individuals on this app or website are superficial when it comes to relationships. In contrast, something like eHarmony is a medium that looks for an audience that is a little bit older and is looking for a long term relationship. Ultimately writing mediums allow us to categorize and anticipate who our audience will be for the most part.
The relationship between audience and medium is that depending on the medium, it is going to determine the audience. For example academic articles are aimed toward a specific audience. High school or college students as well as professors, doctors, or individuals with high education, etc would be the ones who read academic articles. People who want to do leisurely reading wouldn’t be the audience that would read academic articles for fun. A leisurely audience would be more likely to read novels, comics, or magazines. People who enjoy visuals, or for those individuals who don’t like to read much, would choose a medium such as youtube videos, movies, or books on tape because it might be easier for them to interpret information or learn about a certain subject thorough tone, images or music rather than just reading about it. Not only does medium determine audience through learning, but it can determine a specific age group as well. Mediums such as newspapers are directed towards an older generation who would use newspapers as their main source of recent news versus a medium like smart phones that are made for the new generation who are constantly attached to the internet and an endless amount of information available at the touch of a few buttons. These are just a couple examples of how different mediums can bring about separate audiences. Everyone learns differently and has different interests and based on people’s different skills and hobbies, it’s going to change what mediums people prefer to use over others.
The relationship between medium and audience is that interaction effect. In modern society, medium is the major dissemination way for information. Audience acquire knowledge and get information from medium. For example, they can watch TV for some interesting things that they have never seen in their life. The medium can broad audience’s horizon and make different experiences to the audiences. Therefore, medium provides information to audiences. The audiences will use the information in their life, so the medium will affect audiences’ mind and affect that people want to do. For example, the medium brings a few opinions and suggestions for people’s life to change and protect our environment. If people receive these information, people would think how they can change their surrounding and protect their environment around them. They may follow these advices from medium to keep environment in their life. In addition, the success of medium is that most people follow that. The influence of medium is important for flow of information. If there are a few people follow the medium, that medium will have less influence. In easy words, the medium has to achieve popularity, so the preferences of audiences become significant for medium to choose the right information to disseminate. That means that the medium should figure out that people most like and most pay attention. Here is an easy example. I think most of people like the true news and honest media. If media have some fake news or some dishonest behaviors, they must lose lots of their followers. It also has bad influence for their community. Therefore, it is interaction effect between medium and audience.
Medium and audience has a very important connection because certain audience has preferences to the way their information is given to them. For instance, people who are religious in nature, when faced with difficulties will go to religious-based sources for information, like pastors, bibles, or perhaps online groups made up of people who share that same religion. People who spend all day online will go online for any information they seek, no matter what their question is. You wouldn't expect a blogger to find an encyclopedia or dictionary to look up a word when they could just go to dictionary.com instead, because it would be out of character for them. The medium in which people receive their information has a lot to do with their character, and the way they receive it is an interactive process, whether that be interactive between an author of a book and the reader, or the author(s) of a website and their viewers.
Part of that interactive process is that the authors are writing to a specific group of people that they presume will understand them and what they are talking about. It is like a conversation, a question and an answer, a guidebook. The mutual topic connects the people together and helps form a community. This means that, if someone has a question about that topic again, they are likely to go to the same place. If you cannot understand what a certain source is saying, then it was probably not meant for you. Having a medium that your audience will connect to and is likely to go to, like a gamer and the internet or a student and their textbook, is important, otherwise the information you are trying to get across won’t reach your target audience.
Blog #3 Medium and audience are two words that are interconnected and related to each other in many ways. Whenever we write something, it is important to consider the fact that someone is always going to be reading our works. A writer communicates with an audience through a medium which is how information is shared. Knowing/gauging your audience is important as a writer, because naturally you want your writing to be read by certain people. For instance, we would use a technology-based medium to communicate with a group of college engineering students, because they are more inclined to be attracted to technology. This way they grasp the information faster because it is given to them in a format which they can comprehend. Once you know the specific audience, you can decide which medium you want to communicate through in order to effectively convey your argument/point. The medium should be something that is appealing to the audience, otherwise the information will get lost and won’t be properly conveyed. How well the audience understands the writer’s message is utterly dependent on the medium upon which the information is conveyed. For example if you wanted to tell a story to a group of children, you probably wouldn’t use a radio show or a web site to convey your writing. Instead you many opt to use a different medium such as story-telling or writing a book so that the target audience is more receptive. Overall, the relationship between the medium and a particular audience is integral for every writer to understand so that they can communicate better with their audience.
The medium is how the writing is conveyed. Whether it be in a book, newspaper, blog post, Facebook. Or even heard on the radio or seen on TV, writing doesn’t have to mean just reading it. The audience is whoever is reading or watching what is being conveyed. For instance, there was a shooter on the Ohio State University campus today, and I used Channel 4 news as a medium to read what was the newest update. Or when I am working at the urgent care, patients will use the phone as a medium to contact us about pricing, or how late we are open. So the relationship between the medium and the audience is that the audience uses the medium as an information source. No matter what it is, your cell phone is probably the biggest medium because now a days they can pretty much reach the whole world with a click of a button. You can access the internet, you can access Facebook, which reaches to all corners of the world. Also with Tumblr, I have met multiple people from different states, and countries on Tumblr. The mediums have obviously changed over periods of time, each era in history seems to have a new medium that is “technologically advanced” starting with the typewriter, then the computer, and now smart phones.
The relationship between medium and audience is a very direct one. When presenting information, the type of medium used immediately effects what type of audience will view it. For example, material presented in a printed newspaper or magazine could not reach an audience that is blind. On the other hand, material that is written in braille could not reach an audience that relies solely on their vision to gather information. However, if the medium used was in an audio format such as an MP3 or a podcast, the information would be able to reach both audiences. Accessibility plays a large role in the relationship between medium and audience. An obvious example would be using a technological medium. It would only be able to reach audiences that have access to that particular technology. If you are writing an online blog, the audience would be limited to people who have internet access, and further, people who either already know where your blog exists or happen to stumble upon it. There are endless examples to illustrate the interactive relationship between medium and audience, but I think it’s most important to note that the relationship is direct, linear, and works in both directions. Not only does the medium affect the type of audience, but the intended audience should always be considered when choosing which medium to use in order to select one that will be most effective in reaching that particular audience.
The relationship between medium and audience is one I admittedly do not give much thought to when writing or reading. Typically I focus on content and how that affects the audience, or how the content reflects the audience it is being written for. While beginning this Intro To project, I was forced to consider how medium interacts with audience. In my case, I am looking at comic books; specifically, narrative in comic books. Until this blog, I had not clearly thought of the medium/audience relationship, but what I’m accomplishing in my project totally addresses the relationship. The medium of the comic book itself is unique and offers a form of storytelling and sequential art that although achieves the same goal as say, a novel, it does so in it’s own manner. For the audience to grasp whatever they are taking in, familiarity with the medium is seemingly essential. A reader would not be able to understand a superhero adventure if they don’t know how to read a comic book: one has to understand how to follow the word bubbles, the order in which to follow the panels, and attempt to comprehend the passage of time from panel to panel, page to page. That being said, the medium by which rhetoric, academia, a story, or other forms of information is given is heavily influential in how the audience perceives that information.
