What do you know about composing? How does your portfolio demonstrate that knowledge?

  1. What do I know about composing?

Composing is one’s ability to articulate artistic thoughts and ideas into a comprehensive format that others can understand. Composing is something that I have done for many years. I have composed pieces of music for multiple instruments, photography portfolios for both film and digital photography, and now an online portfolio demonstrating my work in writing. I also have many years of experience leading others in the Army. Being able to lead others into doing what is necessary and make them feel like it was their own idea shows composition in a much different fashion.

How does my portfolio demonstrate that knowledge?

My portfolio is a collection of my writings that are put together in a way that shows who I am as a writer. The cover page immediately shows who I am and what I have accomplished. My accomplishments have sculpted who I am as a writer and I try to lay that out in how my portfolio is presented. The collection of pictures and the structure of the pages shows that I am organized but also have a good sense of humor. I try to be a well rounded individual because that will allow me to successfully compose much of my life’s work for others to follow suit. In essence, I like to lead by example.

  2. Composing is your ability to express your ideas into a legible, creative work, usually but not limited to literature or music. I know that composing is a skill that even “natural writers” have to practice at in order to master. It is a craft that takes time and a cohesive format and concise context to be considered well done. My composing comes in the form of the written word rather than musical notes, but in either format composing must be organized in a way that makes sense, otherwise it is just gibberish. My portfolio demonstrates my knowledge of composing because I have it in an exact, organized way, even down to the formatting and the placement of the text boxes and titles. Beyond that, even the color schemes and pictures even match on my portfolio. The portfolio starts with an entrance page about me, there is a page for a previous work of mine, then each one of my projects has its own page, complete with the draft, the final copy, the reflection, and an updated, revised copy should I have chosen to do one for said project. This shows that I do have a clear knowledge about what composing is and how it is supposed to look like with something like a formal portfolio. My portfolio shows the progression of my writing throughout the semester and, hopefully, how I have improved. It shows that I can do what is expected of me and make necessary changes in order to succeed in composing a written assignment that matches the efforts of the class.

  3. I know that composing involves a lot of different aspects to make it 100% complete. It’s a combination of research, organization, having a well thought out argument/thesis, consisting of proper sources for evidence and support of that argument/thesis, and involves a lot of revision. Without the proper research and knowledge of the subject of the text, there is no purpose of the composition. Research is the basis of the text and the starting point, it’s mandatory that it be included in the text. Organization is also a key aspect because without good organization, none of the information will make sense to the audience. The reader needs to understand the text in order to have a well thought out composition. Having a well thought out argument/thesis gives the composition purpose and meaning and answers the question of “so what?” It’s necessary to know why a composition is being written and how it contributes to an audience. Without the appropriate resources and evidence to back that argument/thesis up, it loses credibility. An audience will not believe a text if there isn’t examples and proof that support the argument/thesis. Revision is the last but probably the most important step of composing because this is the time when you can go back and fix errors that were not seen the first time around and to get a second chance. It’s also the time to add in missing information and to fill in the blanks of where information might be missing or questions that the audience may still have that should be answered. The first draft is never meant to be the final draft. My portfolio demonstrates this knowledge because it includes both first and last drafts of my assignments/projects and has a revision section where I discuss what I have learned about writing, research, and composing from doing the individual assignments/projects.

  4. Composing in my first expression is something related to music. However, as my knowledge improve, I find this term is not only limited for music aspect also can use into other different aspects, such as design aspect, architecture field or writing field and so on. In my opinion, composing is a creative activity. I think this is “natural skill”, everyone should have this ability. For example, when people talking with someone, this is a composing process. Because people should create words first then put these words together to make a sentences. Another example is in the writing process, we add ideas or thoughts together and make these become to a complete article and make it readable.
I have done four major projects in this course during this semester. First, in my homepage I give audience briefly information about this online portfolio. Then from the menu I have set five different pages for my these four projects ( wiki, worknets, annotated bibliography, and intro to project) plus about me. Audience can through about me page to have some information about me. Also, audience can through email to connect me and give me some suggestion how to improve my online portfolio. Each project has its own page which help audience easy to look at it. For each project, I will post my first draft and finial draft. The reason is audience can clearly to see my improvement between first draft and final draft. Moreover, I will also attach reflation for each one. Because I want to record what did I learned from these four different project and what the strength and weakness for each project. Because these can help me to make better for the future project.

  5. Composing is all about creating something, by bringing things together to create something bigger. Whether it is notes in a sympathy, or letters to create words, and words to create sentences. It is all a form of composing. Everything we have been writing in this class has been composed. It is made up of a bunch of parts, research, thoughts, quotes, citations, then it is all brought together to make our projects and papers. The portfolio is a way of composing on place to be able to see everything that we have composed over the semester. It will show that we know how to correctly bring together all the different projects and papers in way that makes sense. A way that is available to the readers and it is concise organized and easy to navigate. The portfolio is a way to showcase all the different things we have done throughout the semester and also be able to show our progress. Show where we started with the process and where we went with it. It also show reflections on how we were feeling and thinking as we composed the different projects. A big part of composing is bringing things together in a manner that makes sense and is organized. This is a huge part of our portfolio it has to make sense and be easy to navigate.

  6. I think that composing can be many things. Before starting this class if I was asked that question I would relate it back to the composition of music because I used to be a music major. After taking this class I can see it in a different way now. Composition is the process of taking a thought and putting it into writing so an audience can view it. That writing can be many things. Whether it be a book, a social media post, a video or even a song, they are all still writing. Through the composition one must present an argument to let the audience know what is going to be said. To strengthen the argument a composition must have good evidence, and lots of it. Also, before creating your composition you must think about who the intended audience will be. This will change how you present the information. If it’s for the general public then you should use general language so that everyone can understand the argument. I think that in my portfolio the process of composition can be demonstrated. The portfolio itself is a collection of compositions that all come together to form a bigger compositions. I would consider the portfolio to be a composition itself. I show all my work throughout the semester and the reflections show what I have learned through each of these projects. The reflections I guess you could say are presenting the argument that I have learned something and then projects themselves are the evidence to show it. Along with the individual writings that all present an argument and evidence about a specific subject.

  7. In writing, composing is the process of producing a text in an article, book, etc. The process includes all the steps that combine together in order to end up with a good piece of writing. Beginning with thinking about the ideas you want to write about, reading references and what other authors have said about that certain topic, defining the targeted audience, and based on that, carefully choosing the appropriate terminology to be used and the writing style you want to follow. The composing process is not used for writing only, it can be applied to any kind of art like music, poetry, painting and so many other ones. For example, in painting, you have to organize your ideas, know how to express them, being knowledgeable about the painting styles, etc. All of these steps are part of the composing process. The portfolio we are doing for the class is a good example that teaches us how to practice the composing process. Because in this portfolio, we are required to choose a general theme, the targeted audience, the projects we want to present to our audience, and how are we going to organize everything together to fit in the theme we chose.

  8. Composing is the entire process of creating a work, whether it is a piece of music, an article, an entire novel, or anything in between. It can even apply to just speaking or visual art. Composing encompasses the brainstorming portion of the process, researching, making a physical copy, and all of the editing afterward. It takes a lot of thought, a lot of work, and most of all, a lot of time. My portfolio represents this because it includes all of the pieces we have worked on throughout the semester. The individual works are comprised of all the readings we did, all the discussions we had, all the workshopping we did with each other, and all of the writing and edits we did on our own. When all these things are accounted for, I was able to compose a reflection for each assignment. Since these reflections are included in the portfolio, it gives a fuller view of what I did for each assignment. The portfolio exemplifies a wide range of composing, and not just in a traditional sense. Working with the portfolio kind of put me outside of my comfort zone, as I have never made a website or anything like it. You have to consider the theme, the fonts, the graphics, and the content, and make sure they all make sense together in order to represent what you’re trying to convey to your intended audience. It definitely adds a whole new dynamic to my usual compositions.

  9. Composing consists of creating something new from one’s ideas. Sometimes composing has to do with a person’s beliefs or feelings. It can take place over different mediums such as print, in the media, or even word of mouth. The different mediums are chosen based on what is the target audience and what message you are trying to get across. Composing something is time consuming because it has drafts and editing that need to be done before the final project is complete. It can be frustrating but overall a relief once it is all said and done. In my portfolio we had to include all of our projects that we completed from the time class started until now which is four projects total. Each project had a specific purpose but most of them had to do with our major. We were graded on each one as if it was a draft which gave us a chance to keep expressing what we thought we had completed to receive a better grade. The portfolios also had our reflections to them on it which entailed the process, struggles, and time we spent to complete it. We composed a website based on our preferences to showcase our classwork. It included designs that had different fonts and images.

  10. From my experience in WRTG 225: Writing in a Changing World I have learned that composing is an active process, involving deliberate elements of rhetoric to communicate a specific argument to a selected audience. Throughout the semester I have wrote, revised, and reflecting several writing assignments. Each of these projects asks me to engage with the purpose of each of my texts in order to communicate the intent effectively. I learned from the ongoing process of creation, reflection, and redrafting that a writer must make deliberate decisions when writing to best present the text’s intent to the audience. Through my reflections, I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses when composing in order to challenge my previous knowledge of composing. I saw from my reflections areas that I could develop as a writer such as clarifying my argument or providing statistical evidence in order to increase comprehension form my audience.
My portfolio demonstrates my acquisition of composition theory as well as my development as a writer by showcasing my writing process. Evidence of my growth as writer is reinforced by descriptive introductions to each project and corresponding segments, providing commentary for my writing experience. The most evident instances of change are the revisions of final drafts after the feedback. My submissions for the final writing projects act as summative assessments of my achievement, unless I chose to revise them further. In the instances where I did revise my projects, connections between the feedback I received from the instructor and the changes I incorporate as a response to the feedback reveal my evolution as writer throughout the semester.

  11. Typically, we think of "composing" as a process of the arts, as in, one composes a symphony. However, I've found that composition is the process of producing an original contribution to discourse. Whether it be a reflection of something else, or a new idea entirely, composition takes it's form across multiple mediums. In my portfolio, each of my projects can be considered something that I've composed. In each of the assignments I was given a task to either reflect or build on a given discourse. The encyclopedia project demonstrates my ability to compose conversation about an abstract idea like epistemology within two mediums. An example of reflective composition would be the annotated bibliography project, in which I relate multiple sources to find a common thread. Nothing new is necessarily produced here, but something was created as a form of contribution to existing discourse.
In this sense, the production of a reframed or condensed idea also qualifies as composition. Perhaps the truest example of an instance of composition is my “Intro To” project. In this project, I explore a subject with an original narrative. Though I am not exploring new grounds, I am making an original contribution, and offering my own voice to the conversation.
